SEO Basics
In general, SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is can be divided into two parts; On-page optimisation and Off-page optimisation. On-page optimisation involves tweaking your html and keywords to adjust the frequency ad precise placement of keywords. Off-page optimisation is to do with what other sites link to your site and how they do it.
On-page Optimisation.
Each search engine or directory has its own specific methods for spidering and indexing pages and as such, optimisation with a certain search engine in mind might not be optimal for another. There are SEO experts who will optimise one page for one search engine and then have other versions of the same page, one for each search engine. This is top level SEO and not really necessary on an entry level unless you are trying to get top listings on popular and competitive search terms which is beyond the scope of this tutorial.
In general you can successfully optimise one page which will normally get spidered and indexed by most of the search engines. Some of the techniques on how to do this are highlighted below.
Don't overdo the keywords to include on each page,
Much better to have several pages with a few keywords on each than one page encompassing many. Aim for the smaller niche and you will attract more and better targeted clients to your page.
To start with you might want to consider using 3 keywords per page.
These 3 keywords should be included in three headline tags each with a short paragraph. In each paragraph you should try to include the 3 keywords (in the first sentence if possible) in the most natural way possible. Then should come your more content.
Information on your subject is what the search engines (and your visitors) love. Try to make your text as informative as possible.
Try not to fill your pages advertising or with a load of links to affiliate programs.. this will not help at all.
You should have at least one image. Image names should contain the keywords, ie keyword1-image.jpg and the images should have an ALT tag also that contains one of the other keywords. ie, 'Picture of keyword2'
The positioning of the images on the page isn't as important as other aspects and as such it doesn't really matter where you place the images.
To finish, at the bottom of the page you should return to using your 3 keywords to have them appear on the very last sentence.
The on-site linking also influences some of the search engines. Try to maintain links to all the main pages on your site on every page. The anchor text should include one of the keywords of the page. ie, instead of using:
you would be better using
Off page optimisation.
This is a little more difficult to control but many experts state that it is the larger part of SEO with the Search engines putting more importance on off-page optimisation than On-page optimisation. Basically it is the number of sites that link to you, and the quality of those sites.
Google's 'page rank' is a fairly good guide as to this.
If you have links to many pages from your site (outbound links) and not many links to your site from other pages (inbound links) then this is not very good off-page optimisation. The Ideal is to have many inbound links from sites that have a high page rank or that also have a lot of other pages linking to them.
Reciprocal links where there is an exchange of links from one site to another also score well with the search engines. However, if you have many sites (even if they are on different domains) on the same ip or server then these will not help much at all.
To sum up... the more links you have coming in the better and the more incoming links that your incoming links have even better still.
